Opening in 1990, Moda gained immediate attention in a city with limited men’s fashion options. At the time Moda was considered to be “just slightly more fashionable than other stores” and for owner Michael Barone this was not good enough. Three years later and with a limited budget Michael set out for Paris
with the hopes of bringing back collections that would make Moda a premier men’s store not only in Pittsburgh but in the United States.
After arriving in Paris and exploring the Parisian menswear conventions Michael was more than a little disappointed. He found that many of the collections he had just worked in New York were also showing in Paris. It was looking like the show might be a total bust until Michael came across one very unusual booth that had no clothing in sight. Out front sat a woman with curlers in her hair, sitting behind an ironing board with an old rotary phone. The sign above read Paul Smith. Michael finally found the intriguing collection he was looking for. After some discussion with the woman she picked up the rotary phone and made a call to the showroom to schedule an appointment. She then passed the phone to Michael. The sales director had a few questions to qualify him. Where are you from? What designers do you carry? Michael quickly answered with Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, U.S.A. and Comme des Garcon, Gigli, and Gaultier…except the second part of cialis maximum dose his answer wasn’t exactly the truth. By the time he landed back in Pittsburgh, and before each designer could contact each other to verify the information Michael had provided, the orders had been placed. After that it became much easier for Michael to acquire the most important lines in men’s fashion. Moda was one of the first stores in the country to carry Dolce & Gabanna, Dsquared2, and Diesel to name a few. Michael could be found in the front row of many runway shows in Paris, Milan, and New York. This became the norm for many years after the Paul Smith fib. In the mid 90’s at any given time you could flip to the back pages of a GQ Magazine you’d often find the phrase “available at Moda, Pittsburgh… ” next to many top designer names. So many in fact that Michael often had to turn down many eager companies looking to have their collections featured at Moda.
In 1995 a very persistent company from Italy kept calling Moda to get Michael into their showroom. Finally he gave in and agreed to set a very early morning appointment for his last day in Milan. Michael knew as he made the appointment that he probably would not make it. Many post runway show parities are by invitation only and are scheduled in advance. With only one night left Michael had several events to make an appearance at. The parties spilled over to the next morning and Michael never made the appointment. On the plane ride back to Pittsburgh, trying to justify his actions Michael kept thinking, “Who needs really expensive nylon backpacks anyway?” What a huge mistake. A native of Roselle, New Jersey, Jean Bryant was a news reporter for the New Jersey Afro-American Newspaper until she moved to Pittsburgh in 1972, where she was promptly hired by the Pittsburgh Press.
Bryant wrote for the Press for 20 years until its demise in 1993. Shortly after, she
was hired as a writer for the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette and worked there until her retirement in 1999.
Although, devoted to her journalism career, Bryant found time to work with area youths. In 1973, a year after her arrival in Pittsburgh, she established the Miss Black Teenage Pageant, an annual eight-week, self-improvement program.
Since its inception, the program helped shape the lives of 1,831 young women 10 to 17 years old, many of whom are now successful lawyers, ministers, teachers, actresses, entertainers, businesswomen, and doctors and members of the judicial why cialis not working system.
